Matt Tutor

Matt Tutor was born and raised in Memphis. He had already been singing in choirs for a while when he started formal study of piano at age 6, and still considers himself an avid student of music. He dropped piano for guitar at age 14, and started doing professional gigs and sessions soon after that. Matt became a staple on the Memphis music scene as a highly energetic guitarist and vocalist, and continued doing more and more sessions around town before eventually dropping all of that to finish a degree in Jazz Performance from the University of Memphis. From there, he eventually ended up in Boston where he received a Master’s Degree in Jazz Composition from the New England Conservatory of Music after having the honor of studying under Bob Brookmeyer, Ken Schaphorst, George Russell, Malcolm Peyton, Daniel Pinkham, and Frank Carlberg. As a composer, Matt has written for people from Joyce Cobb to Antonio Hart to Mulgrew Miller. He has also composed or arranged music for horn sections, string sections, and studio orchestras for dozens of albums and live performances. His primary focus at present is scoring music for movies, writing orchestral tracks for various album projects, and writing and conducting orchestral music for several churches and mega-churches around the country.

Matt is currently the Director of Music at Memphis University School. In mid-2020, he became the managing member of a creative organization known as the Memphis Sound Collective. His vision is on revitalizing the Memphis creative community by building a bridge between the local music community and the local film community, and ultimately branching that relationship out across the rest of the country. Matt is deeply passionate about bringing national creative industry to Memphis to recharge local creatives and musicians to start pushing the envelope again.
